Sutton shines in Porsche Carrera Cup Italia (19-10-09)

Fresh from finishing second in the 2009 Porsche Carrera Cup GB, James Sutton made his debut in the Carrera Cup Italia at Monza over the weekend (17/18 October) and claimed a podium finish on his first experience of the famous Italian track.

Sutton says that his results in the Carrera Cup GB this year opened the door for the fully funded drive at Monza. "The team had a spare car and offered me the drive; it was too good an opportunity to miss," he said. "With my success in Britain in 2009 they recognised that I'd be a good candidate."

Despite having to learn the Monza track, Sutton finished fifth in the opening race and then third in the second race, setting the fastest lap of the second race in the process. "What I learnt in Carrera Cup GB this year stood me in good stead for battling with the top Italians," he said.

"It was hard work learning the track against all the local drivers who know it so well. But it was a fantastic chance to learn Monza and I hope to be racing there in the Porsche Supercup next season."

With drivers like Alessandro Zampedri at the head of the field, Sutton said that the racing was tough. "It is very, very competitive out there and the pace of the front guys is Supercup pace, so I was very pleased to be battling with them."
